Clarifying Rule #8 - Language

As we approach the opening of World 3 here on the US Server, I would like to take a moment to review one of the rules that seems to be broken with every new world we open:

§8) Language

Tribal Wars is an English game. The use of other languages in game is forbidden. This means all profiles, mails, forum posts and any other publication must be in English.

A short phrase in another language is permitted, provided that this is translated to English either directly following or preceding it.

Creating a tribe exclusively for one nationality or language is strictly forbidden and may result in the tribe being disbanded.

Support tickets must also be created in English, otherwise we will not reply.

This server is an English language server. Every new world we get, someone invariably starts a tribe and all the forums are in a language other than English. This is forbidden. We get responses like:

- What we post in our forums isnt your business
- We dont speak English
- Our tribe is only for "our country"

A couple of quick points.

1. All in game actions, including forums, can be reviewed at anytime for compliance to any and all rules. For the moderator team to be able to ensure all rules are followed, we have to be able to read what is there. Rules like not using swear words, not sharing passwords, offensive or pornographic materials are forbidden, ect. Without being able to decipher what is in the forums, we cannot ensure fair play.
2. As all moderators are volunteers, time is very important, so the moderators will not spend time translating everything they see that is not in English. Google translator isnt always very accurate either.
3. The rule outlines that no tribe may be created for solely one country. A tribe may not only allow people of a certain nationality to join.

What is permitted is that if a phrase or post is made in a language other than English, that an English translation must accompany it in the same post. This allows for those whose English isnt quite as good to still be part of the tribe and participate.

If you have questions about this rule or need further clarification, please post here or send a ticket through the in game system.

Good luck and happy gaming!

And how can you ensure that this rule is followed? :p

Is there a completely 100% full proof way of ensuring that, of course not. However, it is in the rules and therefore I needed to include it. In addition, there has been several profiles of tribes that state the tribe is for a particular nationality. This is illegal. If a tribe were to deny someone for entry because they werent from a particular country, then it would be illegal. If they didnt want to let them in the tribe because they asked for an invite after 9am, then thats perfectly fine! Just not due to nationality.

Does this have to go by US time? What if they wouldnt invite me because I asked for an invite after 9 am Portuguese time? I think that should be illegal.

Yes, that is legal.

I dont write the rules, I merely enforce them, as written.

There is usually a difference between spirit of a rule and letter of it. The spirit of the rule is to discourage discrimination based on nationality, which in essence is wrong. There are good and bad players on every server and in every country. While completely enforcing that rule is nearly impossible, that doesnt make the intentions of that rule any less valid. No one can enforce the speed limit on roads 100% of the time, that doesnt mean that going over the speed limit is less illegal when your arent caught. The rule makes sense, but the ability to police it with 100% accuracy and efficiency is the challenge.

I also don´t agree with the rule but...i have to say that...if you are obligated to write in english...why don´t you let an english/american guy enter the tribe?? That makes no sense either...

Either way... Rules are meant to be followed... I can bet you don´t like Socrates but you have to follow his lead somehow!!:)

We dont disagree, its in interpretation. I believe a tribe should invite anyone they want and no one that they dont. But that opinion should be driven based on the factor that the player is good enough or would fit well within the tribe or not. Not based solely on the fact that they are from a country that is different from the rest of the tribe. To say "You cant join, your from Zimbabwe" isnt a rational excuse.

Yep..and since you can´t say "you don´t speak portuguese" (because you have to speak english in-game) there is not much excuses...

You can always say:

"My tribe is full...we want just 20 members"--> This excuse is valide! I think...

The main goal of the game is not dictated because of someone´s country... so i´ll have to ask... Why isn´t a Chinese able to play this game with several africans? Are you telling me that i can´t play along with a tribe full of Americans??--> Why´s that?

Keep it by the rules man...

The fact that a player is Chinese, or of any other nationality, does not impact his ability to fit well within a tribe of Africans, especially when they all must speak English anyway. I play in a tribe where we have representation from 9 different countries. We are all required to speak English. Some speak it better than others, but it is still a requirement. We all work together great and help to teach each other. The fact that we are from different nations makes no difference, in fact, it gives us things to talk about, in the forums and on skype.

i'm not saying tha i will break the rules...that's not in my mind lol i'm just trying to show my point of view...

i think that's completly impossible for a chinese to play with africans...it's completly diferent language and culture...

i understant a part of this rule but this rule have some fails...imagine that me and my friends decide to make a tribe only for people that we already know...if we go to our own server it's ok, but if you want to go to other countries servers we get banned for descrimination when that's not the case...
