So the first scout on the world died when scouting a barb village. Any ideas how thats possible? If scouts can only die to scouts and there wasnt any other scouts.... confused.

Each village has a basic defense amount. If the barbarian village built a wall as well, it makes it even more likely that the scout died. Unless the scout was sent with other units, it's not surprising that it died.

You must send at least 4 scout in order not to lose one, even against an empty village. This setting is different on every world. Walls and luck (and morale if it is enabled) have no effect on it.

This worlds settings require you to send 4 scouts to both players and barbarian villages.

As mentioned here, previously .

Its a setting has nothing to do with defense. Defense does not effect scouts.
