when you attack a bonus village why does one person always die when it says the defender had no defenders?

Every village has a base defense, even if there are no defenders in them. So with 50 spears 1 will die because of that base defense. Also, there might be a wall which would raise the base defense of the village.

Here is what help says about basic defense.

You don't always lose one guy, if you have a small amount of luck you might not lose any troops at all.
