You might want to double check that credit card statement.
According to a report by CTV News, a large North American credit card payment processing firm called Global Payments is investigating a security breach that may have seen U.S. hackers recover information belonging to more than 10 million credit card accounts.
The breach is believed to have affected Visa and MasterCard in addition to several other U.S. banks and credit card companies.
In an interview with CTV British Columbia Better Business Bureau spokesperson Mark Fernandes said it's possible that Canadian credit cards have been compromised.
"We're hoping that it's limited, but there is a strong possibility," he said. "If you have done any cross-border shopping in recent time, in recent months, you may want to look at the statements."
Global Payments is expected to provide more details about their investigation into the breach Monday.
In the meantime a Verizon spokesperson is advising Canadians from coast-to-coast to examine their statements for any suspicious charges.
"Lots of consumers overlook the small little charges on their statements and that is how people are continually able to trick them, deceive them and steal their information," Andrea Woroch told CTV News.
The RCMP offers these tips to those looking to prevent themselves from becoming victimized by a credit card scam:
• Always check your statements and report any discrepancies to your credit card provider.
