I don't know if this is relevant atm but Innogames is a business. Businesses require revenue in order to pay their expenses. Businesses are usually FOR PROFIT as well. I'm sure they would like everyone to have premium but in order to help market (and introduce) people to their wonderful game, they allow people to play for free. (and they do really good job at that)
This probably wasn't meant to be forever... just long enough for you to decide if you like the game or not. I feel most people (are relatively young) and thus lack the real word experience to fully grasp this concept.
